District EL Plan

Our EL Program
The goal of the Russell County Schools English Learner program (EL) is to help students who do not speak English as their primary language become proficient in English as they learn academic content.

When a student enrolls in the district, a home language survey is completed. If the home language survey indicates that a student may have limited English proficiency, the ESOL teacher will work with the EL committee to determine if the student qualifies for the EL program. The W-APT screener may be administered if the student has not previously taken the WIDA ACCESS test.

Students in the EL program learn academic content in the regular classroom and are provided language accommodations according to their I-ELP. Students may receive push-in or pull-out services from the ESOL teacher according to the I-ELP.

Parents may decline services from the ESOL teacher but may not opt out of accommodations to academic content.
